Metric PVC Plain Socket Tank Connector/Bulkhead

Watch:
Bulkhead/Tank Connector Fittings (7mins) - Summary available at bottom of page

Fitting threaded fittings to tank connectors / bulkheads.

Our metric tank connectors have a fixed nut at one end. This has two advantages: firstly, it makes sealing much easier as there is no risk of fluid travelling along the thread; and, secondly, as there is only one nut to tighten, installation, especially by one person, is far easier.

Our metric tank connectors - sometimes also called "bulkheads" - have a dual socket (ie: a glue socket on each side) and a single spigot on the plain end.

THREADS: The threads on our metric tank connectors are male BSP parallel ones. Although the primary use of a PVC tank connector is to facilitate an outlet from a tank, some users may wish to thread a fitting onto the "inside" male thread. If this is the case, please be sure that the fitting you are threading on is a parallel thread, and not a tapered one. If in doubt, feel free to contact our technical team and they will be only too happy to advise.

We also supply holesaws to match our tank connectors.

Bulkhead/tank connector fittings are designed to go through the side of a tank either as a drain, a supply, or an overflow. They are inserted through a hole in the tank wall and clamp onto that wall so the fluid can flow through without leakage. There are three different types of bulkhead fittings: an imperial bulkhead fitting, a threaded imperial bulkhead fitting, and a metric bulkhead fitting. This page features the metric bulkhead fitting, which is plain to threaded.

The metric bulkhead fitting has a nut that is a part of the fitting itself, so one side of the bulkhead fitting is a solid piece of plastic. To go onto this side, there are two EPDM seals and a second, separate, nut. One of the EPDM seals goes down to the inside of the nut attached to the fitting and this presses against the wall of the tank, then the other EPDM seal goes onto the other side of the fitting against the other side of the tank, and the separate nut threads down to press against that. This fitting provides a very good seal as there is no way that the fluid will go down the thread and under the nut because the nut is a part of the fitting itself. The only way a leak might happen is if the tank is a rough GRP tank, in which case a bead of silicon around the exposed side of the EPDM seal which will press against the tank wall will seal up any roughness and prevent a leakage.

An advantage of the metric bulkhead fitting is that it is a moulded fitting. This means that it's a 50mm socket on one inside and a 63mm spigot on the outside, and a 50mm socket on the other inside. The size of the sockets on the inside is the same and so rather than having to find something to put on the thread, you can glue a piece of pipe inside the fitting if you want and put an elbow on, for example. The metric bulkhead fittings are therefore more versatile than the imperial ones.

It is important to note that these fittings have a parallel thread rather than a taper thread. If you want to thread another fitting on the other side of the bulkhead fitting, remember that most PVC fittings have a taper thread, and so your other fitting will only go on about three or four threads, rather than all the way down - so don't be surprised if that happens.

Deciding which bulkhead fitting you need depends on your application. Are you metric or imperial? How neat do you want the bulkhead on the side of your tank? Do you want to be able to glue pipe on the inside and the outside?

We would always recommend using a hole saw to cut the hole in the tank, rather than trying with a jig saw or anything else. Our bulkhead pages provide links to the correct size of hole saw needed for the relevant bulkhead fittings.
