Planning on connecting to the male thread on the tank connector / bulkhead?

The threads on all our tank connectors are BSP parallel and are designed this way so as to accept the backnut. Although tank connectors are not primarily designed to attach fittings onto the threaded end, we are aware that this is sometimes required. Please check with our technical team that the plastic fitting you are ordering to connect to your bulkhead is compatible.
We also supply holesaws to match our tank connectors.

Bulkhead/tank connector fittings are designed to go through the side of a tank either as a drain, a supply, or an overflow. They are inserted through a hole in the tank wall and clamp onto that wall so the fluid can flow through without leakage. There are three different types of bulkhead fittings: an imperial bulkhead fitting, a threaded imperial bulkhead fitting, and a metric bulkhead fitting. This page features the imperial bulkhead fitting, which is plain to threaded.

This fitting is really just a piece of threaded pipe with two nuts that move up and down the thread; because of that, even if the inside nut is threaded right the way down to the start of the pipe's thread, it won't create a perfect seal - there is a risk that the fluid will follow the thread along, go underneath the EPDM seal and the nut, and drip out behind the nut. To prevent this, we recommend using a decent amount of silicon on this fitting. Wind the inside nut all the way to the start of the pipe's thread and apply silicon to the inside of the nut, all the way around it and the thread, then gently push the EPDM ring against the nut to spread the silicon around a little. If it is a rough kind of tank, like a GRP tank, we recommend applying some silicon around the top of that same EPDM ring as well.

It is important to note that these fittings have a parallel thread rather than a taper thread. If you want to thread another fitting on the other side of the bulkhead fitting, remember that most PVC fittings have a taper thread, and so your other fitting will only go on about three or four threads, rather than all the way down - so don't be surprised if that happens.

Deciding which bulkhead fitting you need depends on your application. Are you metric or imperial? How neat do you want the bulkhead on the side of your tank? Do you want to be able to glue pipe on the inside and the outside?

We would always recommend using a hole saw to cut the hole in the tank, rather than trying with a jig saw or anything else. Our bulkhead pages provide links to the correct size of hole saw needed for the relevant bulkhead fittings.
