Where to Use Clear PVC Y-Strainers

Our range of inch sized, clear bodied, PVC Y-strainers are used in systems to prevent damage or fouling to pumps, filters, nozzles, sensors and other sensitive parts that would be found in most PVC pipe systems. The inclusion of Y-strainers (so called because of their characteristic ″Y″ shape) in a PVC pipe system can be of great benefit in preventing unplanned system downtime or handling emergencies.

PVC clear bodied Y-strainers should be mounted with the strainer pointing downwards, which allows for the basket to be removed without any of the collected material re-entering the pipe system. To facilitate the removal of the strainer basket for emptying, a clear body PVC Y-strainer should have an isolation valve either side. Failure to do this will result in losing a lot of process water from the pipe system when the basket is removed. For critical processes where stopping the flow to remove the polypropylene strainer basket is an issue, two strainers should be mounted in parallel with valves either side. One Y-strainer is used as the duty and the other brought into operation when the first Y-strainer needs maintenance.

Many installers prefer to ″up-size″ when it comes to installing PVC Y-strainers to give an increased surface area of strainer basket, which then results in the basket having to be emptied less frequently. This is done by using reducing bushes in either end of the Y-strainer, taking the socket size down to the system pipe size.

Our PVC clear bodied Y-strainers are supplied with union, plain, solvent weld socket ends, which means that if required, the strainer body can be removed from the pipe system and replaced, without the need to cut the pipe. The Y-strainer basket is polypropylene (PP) and seals are EPDM.
