Bulkhead/tank connector fittings are designed to go through the side of a tank either as a drain, a supply, or an overflow. They are inserted through a hole in the tank wall and clamp onto that wall so the fluid can flow through without leakage. There are three different types of bulkhead fittings: an imperial bulkhead fitting, a threaded imperial bulkhead fitting, and a metric bulkhead fitting. This page features the threaded imperial bulkhead fitting.

This fitting has a female thread on both sides. Similar to the metric bulkhead fitting, the threaded imperial bulkhead fitting has a nut fixed onto one side, making a solid piece of plastic. This means that a leak is unlikely since the fluid cannot follow the thread underneath the nut. This fitting also includes two EPDM seals and a separate nut. One of the EPDM seals sits in a recess in the nut attached to one side of the fitting, which is then pressed against the side of the tank wall. The other EPDM seal goes onto the other side of the fitting against the other side of the tank wall, with the separate nut behind it. If it is a rough tank, like a GRP tank, we recommend applying silicon around the exposed side of the EPDM seal which will press against the tank wall.

An advantage of the imperial threaded bulkhead fitting is that the female threads make it a very neat, unobtrusive fitting. You have a very small amount of the fitting coming off of the tank wall, and then all you would need is a plain to threaded nipple going into the bulkhead fitting with an elbow on the other side of it. These fittings have a much lower profile than the metric bulkhead fitting and the plain to threaded imperial bulkhead fitting.

Deciding which bulkhead fitting you need depends on your application. Are you metric or imperial? How neat do you want the bulkhead on the side of your tank? Do you want to be able to glue pipe on the inside and the outside?

We would always recommend using a hole saw to cut the hole in the tank, rather than trying with a jig saw or anything else. Our bulkhead pages provide links to the correct size of hole saw needed for the relevant bulkhead fittings.
